At John England, we aim to create the highest-quality fabrics — not only pure Irish Linen, but a range of fabric blends, including our Linen/Wool.
Wool is a protein fibre. When combined with cellulose linen fibres, it shrinks at a higher rate than 100% linen. The fibres are blended when the weft yarn (wool) is woven into the warp yarn (linen). The result: a fabric that shrinks more, becomes thicker, and increases in weight and warmth — perfect for cooler-weather apparel and structural interiors.
JE2669W — Linen/Wool
The protein fibres of the lambs' wool in this blend increase the shrinkage of this weave structure, creating a tight, thick look and feel.
JE2664W — Linen/Hemp comparison
For comparison: when both fibres are cellulose (linen and hemp), the fabric has a much more relaxed, looser texture after washing — totally different effect with the same weave structure.
Why Linen/Wool?
Our linen is a luxurious fabric all on its own. But fusing our naturally resilient, breathable, sustainable flax fibres with lambs' wool only adds to those properties. Wool is an excellent absorber, can wick away moisture, and retains heat — keeping you warm and cosy.
Wool also…
- Has natural “crimps” — the waviness of its fibres — which vary depending on fineness.
- Becomes softer with friction, maintaining a smooth, comfortable texture suited to interiors and apparel.
- Has remarkable strength and resilience — even stronger than silk — and returns to shape after wear.
- Can be felted: at high temperatures the fibres fuse, binding into felt or “boiled wool”.
- Insulates exceptionally well — trapping warm air and adding cosy weight to the cloth.
What can it be used for?
The heavier weight of a Linen/Wool blend lends itself to seasonal apparel like winter coats and scarves — but the possibilities don't end there. It also makes for ethical, characterful interiors fabric.
Different weave structures unlock different uses. A plain weave for seasonal apparel and upholstery. A basket weave for cushions. A jacquard for curtain fabric or thermal blankets.
